Tantei Opera Milky Holmes Episode
The Sherlock Holmes legacy takes on a new approach with an entire academy dedicated to detective work with the focus on four cute young girls who are trying to live up to the reputation of the school.
What They Say
Developed as a multimedia franchise by Bushiroad, a trading card company, Tantei Opera Milky Holmes is seeing adapted as not only a card game but also a visual novel, a radio drama and a manga prior to this new anime series. Animated by JC Staff with direction by Makoto Moriwaki, who has spent his time on a number of series including work on Doraemon and even some time on Yawara! way back in the day, the Sherlock Holmes angle gets played up in yet another form with this new mystery incarnation.
The concept for this series, set in a futuristic setting, involves a world where things called Toys exist and give people all manner of abilities. Unsurprisingly, these things have people using them for criminal pursuits. While you have the police dealing with it on a regular basis, doudoune moncler, there are plenty of people who want to avoid that angle and they use various detective agencies, such as the one called Milky Holmes. It's owned and operated by Opera Kobayashi who has a group of young detectives working for him. Each of them is definitely their own personality and they each employ their own Toy as well to assist them in their detective duties. But because of their young ages, seeming like junior high school or so, they're all kind of ditzy in a way and tend to have familiar personalities for girls that age. Such as hating to clean, liking to sleep in and so forth. Some stereotypes must be maintained after all.
A lot of the fun from the show will be derived from the girls themselves. The group is lead through the sheer force of presence of Sherlock Shellingford. She's an outgoing and brash type who definitely dominates the place and her Toy allows her to use telekinesis. She's only outdone by Nero, the spunky pink haired girl who loves to eat and sees food in everything. The quiet shy girl is also given her due here with Elly who fits in the stereotype really nicely by having purple hair. Are there any shy blonde girls? The group gets rounded out with Cordelia, who seems to have the least obvious personality other than being brusque at times and kind of annoying once in awhile.
Any group of detectives must have its regular opponents, though hopefully we'll see them branch beyond that in general. Milky Holmes gets to face off of a group called the Gentleman Thieves who have some familiar names to them as well, such as Arsene, Stone River, Twenty and Rat. Rat's kind of amusing as he's often called Rabbit instead by the Milky Holmes gang who can't remember his thief name. Though we see a decent encounter with them through a flash back in the first half, they're not terribly established at this point but that's little surprise. They do have an amusing angle to them though as they all operate undercover at the same school that girls go to in different positions, such as teacher, janitor and even classmates. While we've often seen this done through a one on one basis with a single detective and nemesis, it works out rather nicely with a small group being involved like this and some older characters involved as well.
In Summary:
The opening episode to the series is kind of awkward as it does the flashback and present time material where it shows us mostly in the second half that the lead characters are just shells of who they used to be. With their leader gone missing and having lost their Toys after a failed encounter with the Gentleman thieves, they're not as highly regarded as they once were at the detectives academy by their peers. It's an interesting fall from grace that they have to overcome in order to get back to being who they used to be. Where this show really needs to establish itself, something it can't really do in the first episode, is in the way the quartet of characters interact with each other in order to solve the mysteries and the quality level of the mysteries and challenges they face. Detective shows, even cutely done ones, can be a lot of fun, but if the challenges are amateurish at best, they lose their thrill.
